Heraklion Town

Heraklion Capitol of Crete

Heraklion Town is the capital of Crete and Crete’s largest city has the air and the look of a modern metropolis, it also has a multicultural charm generated by the impressive Venetian fortress that guards the old port and the beautifully restored neoclassical mansions along 25th August Street.

Heraklion is located on the north coast.

Here you will find the Archaeological Museum and the Minoan Palace of Knossos. At the heart of the city you will find the famous lions of Morozini Fountain in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square.

From the next square, Nikiforou Foka Square, two very commercial roads begin, the 1821 Street with its chic and designer stores and 1866 Street with its traditional and pedestrians only street market reminiscent of an eastern bazaar.

Crete’s first and at the moment the only Golf club is found 25 kms from the centre of Heraklion. There are sandy beaches to the east and west of Heraklion. Heraklion has a lot to offer the independent traveller, a vibrant nightlife, restaurants, bars, bustling pavement cafe’s and many shopping precincts to visit.

Overlooking the beautiful harbour and the Fortezza your find Hotel Lato and in a side street there is Hotel Sofia.

To the east of the city you find the bustling resorts of Hersonissos, Malia and Agios Nikolaos

On the outskirts of Heraklion you also find “Nikos Kazatzakis” International Airport.
