Akrotiri Peninsula -
Crete
Akrotiri located on
a peninsula outside Chania
The peninsula of
Akrotiri is famous for its monasteries. Agia Triada used to be a
major orthodox seminary and is built in Venetian style.
Amongst the
charms of Akrotiri are the wild range of hills which run along
the northern edge of it, its monasteries (especially Katholiko),
several pretty beaches and lots of flowers in the spring.
The main attraction of the monastery of Gouverneto is the
"Cave of the bear", so called because of the bear
shape of a massive stalagmite in its middle.
The path takes us
to the ancient abandoned monastery of Katholiko which is partly
built in a cliff and which has a massive stone bridge connecting
the two sides of the valley.
We continue
walking on a very little used path in the hills across the tip
of the peninsula to the beach (and beautiful cove) of Stavros,
made famous as the beach where Anthony Quinn danced his dance in
Alexis Zorbas. Walking time 3 hours 11km
